Internship and Independent Study Programs

Internships

The department has a dynamic internship program for majors and minors. The program matches each student’s internship interest with a field placement.  In addition to the work-site activities as an intern, students are required to complete a related research paper on which they are graded. Internships offer an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical experience, explore interests in particular fields and make contacts in the field.  Some of the agencies students have interned with have included:

  • Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office
  • Mercer County Sheriff’s Office
  • New Jersey State Police
  • New Jersey Office of  Homeland Security and Preparedness
  • New Jersey State Parole Board
  • United States Drug Enforcement Administration
  • United States Marshals Service
  • New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice
  • New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission
  • Municipal Police Departments
  • Municipal Court Administration
  • County Prosecutor’s Offices
  • County Probation Offices
  • Centurion
  • The Trenton Violence Reduction Strategy
  • The Trenton Prevention Policy Board

Additionally, students can pursue internships with agencies not on this list (for example, an agency close to the student’s home for a summer internship) and the Department will work with them and the agency to facilitate the internship experience.

Students who successfully complete the program typically receive one academic unit, although internships for fewer or more academic units are possible.  Students may complete three internships for credit toward graduation.  The requirements for initial application to enroll in the program are:

(1) Minimum of 3 completed units at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ)

(2) Minimum grade point average of 2.0

Students complete 135 hours of work with the agency over the course of the semester for a one academic unit internship.  A research paper is required  that will be encapsulate the internship experience.  There is an information session offered each semester for students considering completing an internship for the following semester.  Internships are offered Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.

For more information on internships, please contact Dr. Becker (beckerp@tcnj.edu), the departmental internship coordinator.

Independent Study & Research

The Department of Criminology offers its students the opportunity to take part in independent study or independent research with a Criminology professor. The student must schedule a meeting with the faculty member to discuss the potential project and adhere to the application process.
